Rodents like rats and mice are more secretive than insects, but there are telltale signs. Seeing a rodent, especially during the day, is a serious sign of an infestation. Also, listen for sounds like scratching, gnawing, or scurrying in walls or ceilings, particularly at night.
Insects leave behind droppings and sometimes wings. Termite wings, for example, are often found near windows or doors. Cockroach droppings, which look like black pepper or coffee grounds, are a sure sign of their presence.
